Douche Bag of The Week for 7/6/09 – Brock Lesnar

Everyone knows what the award is, so, let’s just get right to it….

If there’s one thing that all of us here at Sports Uncut are all fans of, it’s MMA!  We like the drama, we like the chess match that evolves from pitting different styles of fighting against one another and, as barbaric as this may sound, we like seeing people get “throttled”!  See, we’re all fans of the UFC, Affliction, WEC and other organizations, but what Brock Lesnar did on Saturday night has left most of us with a sour taste in our mouths.

Yeah, it’s a sword, NOT a Penis…..geez!

UFC 100 was hyped as one of the “greatest cards of all time”, and was very good, but, definitely NOT the best ever.  See, had the event stopped after Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves, it would have been better for the world of MMA.  Really, it would have…PPV watchers saw a good fight, with a controversial decision in Alan Belcher vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama.  They saw Mike Bisping get absolutely thrashed by Dan Henderson, and The saw a true Champion, fighting in Championship form in Georges St. Pierre.  Hind sight being 20/20, I’m sure Dana white would have pulled the plug on that event at the conclusion of the GSP vs. Alves fight because what happened AFTER that was an absolute Joke and the guy right smack in the middle of it was Brock Lesnar.  See, Brock went back to his WWE/F days in his interviews, both pre and post fight, and, to top it all off conducted himself in as unprofessional and idiotic a manner as I’ve ever seen, and it’s hurt MMA’s struggling quest for legitimacy.

As Frank Mir walked into the ring, you could see that he looked almost as calm as anyone I’ve seen walking in, he was checking out the canvas looking for slip hazards, he was checking the cage, he appeared to be focused and was in the best shape that I’ve ever seen him in.  Brock Lesnar then walked into the ring and also appeared focused, but he was only focused on one thing, and that was Frank Mir.  I was excited, everyone watching with me was excited!  We couldn’t wait!  So, the fight starts, and the first round was a huge disappointment to all of us as Brock completely dominated the first round and made Frank Mir’s face look like hamburger with those size 4XL fists hammering him from the top.  Lesnar easily won that round, and at the end, Frank Mir looked a bit dazed and confused.  So, here goes the second round, and once again, Brock Lesnar get’s Frank Mir down and absolutely pounds him, this time so badly that Herb Dean stepped in and called the fight.  We all know, if there’s one guy that will let a fight go, it’s ol’ Herb, and he stopped this fight at the perfect point, because Mir was badly, badly beaten.

Now, it’s no secret that Brock Lesnar doesn’t like Mir, and Mir feel the same about Lesnar.  these guys don’t like each other, and their interviews show it.  That said, what happened after the fight was called was absolutely ridiculous!  with the fight just called, Lesnar had a sudden flash back to his WWE/F days.  As he got off of Frank Mir, he got into Mir’s face again, just to talk a little more trash and has to be pulled away by his corner men, before another melee breaks out.  Then, he runs around the ring like a A-Hole, flipping everyone off, including Mir!  Reason you ask?  The crowd was booing him like a fat chick at a wet t-shirt contest, they were letting him have it.  Justifiable?  Umm…..NO.

Moving on, after all that, and after that brief episode of “roid rage” had left Lesnar’s body and he was calm enough to be interviewed by Joe Rogan, the ultimate display of “douche-baggery” happens.  Rogan asks him “what are you going to do now that you’ve won”?  Lesnar says; “I’m gonna go drink a Coors Light, that’s right, a Coors Light because Bud Light won’t pay me any money”.  Regarding this, Bud Light is a HUGE sponsor for the UFC, and Dana White (UFC Owner) was probably crapping himself when Lesnar said that.  Lesnar goes on to say “I told him (Mir) that he had a golden horseshoe up his ass…I pulled than some’ bitch out, and beat over the head with it”  Regarding this, he had just beaten the dude down, show a little class Captain Penis Tat!  Lesnar then closes the interview by saying that he was going to go home and that “hell, I might even lay on top of my wife tonight”.  At that point Dana was in the ring, and you could see that he was frustrated.

Dana White had/has every reason to be upset with the way that Lesnar conducted himself.  Firstly, for your “crown Jewel” to act that way in front of millions upon millions of viewers is tough to stomach.  White is trying to grow MMA into everything that boxing was, and he certainly has the product and fighters to do it.  But, you can’t have your main guy (Lesnar) acting like a complete jackass.  There are several reasons for this, one; the MMA is struggling right now to be seen as a legitimate sport by much of the viewing public and two; while trying to grow the sport, you have to have marketable fighters, and Lesnar is because of his noteriety, but he’s also now seen as a sideshow.

Earlier, I mentioned the way that Georges St. Pierre conducted himself, and I did so with good reason.  GSP, always has been and always will be a class guy.  He thoroughly beat down Thiago Alves.  He dissected him from every imaginable angle and made Thiago Alves look like an inexperienced rookie, which he’s not.  Yet, while knowing that he thoroughly and decisively had beaten Alves, in his interview he praised Alves, saying that: “he was one of the biggest challenges in my career and he’ll be back stronger than before” and went on to thank the crowd, Dana White AND Alves for fighting.  It was a show of class that Lesnar is clearly unfamiliar with.

So Brock, might I suggest that you watch the tape of GSP over and over and over again, until you actually understand what it means to be a Champion.  Because you’ve hurt MMA’s rep, and you’ve thoroughly damaged your rep and right now, everyone, including your colleagues and fans see you as a joke. Until you change, you’ll never been seen as a Champion like Couture, GSP, Liddell and countless others, you’ll only be seen a guy with the belt.  And, I for one am hoping that you lose it sooner than later, perhaps to Fedor Emelianenko????  One can dream!

Yes he was a little silly in his actions after the fight but lets think here. He just beat to a pulp the guy that beat him before, also he won the heavyweight championship which was after all his goal. If I just beat the shit out of a guy that I didn’t really like I’d prob talk some shit and if the crowd was booing me, flip them off as well. Because hey..I’m 6′5 265lbs animal, Brock Lesnar, reigning heavyweight champion..whose going to say anything to me? Respect is an important part of any sport but come on, its UFC if you didn’t have a badass in there no one would watch. And lets hope Brock doesn’t have “a bad taste” in his mouth after reading this and finds you, Daymon. Hammer fist anyone?

I’ve been a long time Brock fan, and more than a little tired of the critics still hung up on his time at WWE – which would amount to a relatively small blip on his resume all things considered. As far as I’m concerned, Brock is a superb athlete, awe inspiring fighter, and a humble, polite ‘no nonsense’ guy. Until UFC100 it seems!

That said, Mir knew as much as anyone that Brock practically gave their first fight to him on a silver platter – it was a dumb mistake on Lesnar’s part that cost him the bout. Since then, Mir has been trash talking Lesnar, saying he “hits like my little sister” etc. and basically acting like he won it through his own skill and talent (Which Mir does posses in large amounts, admittedly!). No doubt that a few months of that (Plus the usual crowd harping on about Lesnar being nothing but a pro-wrestler who’s nothing until he beats Mir) probably got under Brock’s skin somewhat. Kind of like letting your 10 year old sister beat you in a fight, then she goes round town telling everyone how she kicked your ass! :P

In the post fight press conference, Lesnar apologised for his conduct that evening and almost set things straight – but even someone like me, a die hard Lesnar fan, was left more than a little put off by everything I’d seen. Whoever won that night, Mir definitely came off the better sportsman through it all – expected trash talking and pre-fight hype aside.

Also, I’m not sure which UFC100 the author watched. In the one we got in the UK, Mir was NOT looking at all relaxed before the fight. That man was filling his shorts – big time! But then, so would I!

    Dave & Dec,

I appreciate the comments!! I for one, am hoping that brock isn’t too mad at me, because you’re right, I really don’t care for a hammer fist to the grill!
